Lectin histochemical investigations of the lung of chickens with special emphasis on selected immunorelevant lung segments.

The study was conducted to determine the presence of lectin on different lung tissue segments of chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) at 3 days old, 1, 2, 3, 10 and 11 weeks old. 24 biotinylated lectins with five specific carbohydrates were used for the histochemical analysis of paraffin-embedded lung epithelial tissues. Results showed that the cells of the primary bronchi of the respiratory epithelium were stained with the GalNAc specific (GlcNAc) lectins such as SBA, VVA and ECL. Epithelial cells of the secondary bronchi and the atria were stained with GlcNAc-lectins WGA and s-WGA. It is suggested that further studies on the structure and functional relationship of the respiratory epithelium and its role in the disease resistance of chickens are needed.
