Feather disease in a budgerigar.

A 1-year-old budgerigar with a history of permanently cleaning its feathers, ruffled plumage and reduced feed intake for some weeks, was examined. Initial examination indicated ectoparasite infestation. Microscopic examination of feather samples revealed numerous mites, which were identified as feather mites (Sideroferus lunula). The infestation was treated by spraying the bird twice with fipronil (Frontline Spray) at an interval of 10 days. The aviary was also thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.
