Influence of indoor and outdoor production on preweaning mortality of piglets.

Preweaning piglet mortality was evaluated in 21 pig production units composed of 11 indoor (11 234 litters) and 10 outdoor (9861 litters) herds for a period of five years. Preweaning death was significantly (P<0.05) higher in the outdoor, compared to the indoor production. Overlay deaths and losses caused by injuries were also significantly higher (P<0.001). Low viability, starvation, death due to low birth weights, cold stress, wasting and scours were significantly higher (P<0.05) in the outdoor compared to the indoor production. Focus should be given on the high preweaning piglet losses in Eastern European outdoor units.
