Growing prosperity in Peru boosts premium brands despite tax increases

Peru's economic growth is being reflected in tobacco sales, with quality brands gaining ground. Health labelling and restrictions on small-pack sizes aim to reduce the lower-end market. Yet, single stick sales are increasing alongside growing contraband. Higher value cigarette brands are gaining favour in Peru's fast growing economy even as its tobacco industry tries to counter a trend back towards illicit purchases of single sticks, for which it blames tax and anti-tobacco legislation. Tobacco exports are meanwhile rising as Peruvian cigar brands begin to establish themselves in key foreign markets by playing on the country's tobacco heritage.
