Nowadays permethrin containing spot-on preparations for dogs are more and more in the centre of increasing interest due to their excellent insecticide, acaricide and repellent efficacy. Preventic Spot-on is a new formulation with 65% permethrin solved in the lipophile adjuvant isopropylmyristate, which has high spreading properties and supports penetration into the upper epidermal cell layers.The additional advantages of this patented ingredient-adjuvant-combination include the facts that there is no crystallisation at low temperatures, no wash-out by rain or bathing, and that the rate of side effects is very low. As shown in the presented study, none of the treated dogs has shown neurotoxic symptoms and there were only 2 dogs of 130 affected locally by application of this product.The clinical signs seen after repeated treatment with different permethrin containing products in one of the dogs leads to the assumption that this was a non product related allergy against permethrin.Further immunological and toxicological examinations should be conducted to confirm the preliminary test results.
