Back to the tire-the use of reclaimed rubber and fine powder in several tire compounds

The European directives on landfill of waste and on end-of-life vehicles are forcing the tire and rubber industries to come up with solutions to the problem of end-of-life tires.According to ETRA(European Tyre Recycling Association),the post-consumer tire arisings in 2003 in the European Union amounted to 2.6 million tons.62 per cent of these post-consumer tires were diverted from landfill and treated in an environmentally sound manner:25 per cent were dedicated to energy recovery,25 per cent were diverted to material recycling,and 12 per cent were retreaded.Remarkably,in 1993,exactly ten years before,the reverse happened and 62 per cent of the post-consumer tires were landfilled.
