The majority of competition tires have a highly sophisticated and expensive compound structure, created bespoke to meet the needs of the various car and bike formulas and series', but there is a problem. The new tread is still full of a molecular structure of polymer bonds, many of which are short and weak. To give the tires the necessary extra grip and life the manufacturers have designed into them, these weak bonds -like strings of spaghetti - must be broken, crosslinked, and reformed to form longer, stronger ones. With race tires, this method of curing is known as "scrubbing".
