It was only recently that the term 'nanoparticle' entered our technical vocabulary to describe matter of particularly small dimensions (1-100nm).Both carbon black and silica are used in tires at these minute particle sizes.Tires,then,are perhaps the nanocomposite of greatest commercial importance today.Carbon black,the industry name for this sootlike material,has been used as the principal reinforcing agent for rubber for just over 100 years.
