BHP Billiton Forms JV With Four Chinese Steelmakers For Mine Development

BHP Billiton announced, on March 1, 2004, its intention to enter into the Wheelarra Joint Venture with four of China's leading steelmakers to jointly develop Jimblebar iron mine in Western Australia. The joint venture will secure the sale to the Chinese steelmakers of approximately 12 million tons per year of iron ore over 25 years. Seven partners of the joint venture are BHP Billiton, CI Minerals Australia (Australian juridical person of Itochu Corporation), MIOC (Mitsui Iron Ore Corporation, Australian juridical person of Mitsui & Co.), Wuhan Iron and Steel (Group) Corporation, Maanshan Iron and Steel Company Limited, Jiangsu Shagang Group Co Ltd, and Tangshan Iron and Steel (Group) Co Ltd. The said seven companies signed LOI (Letter Of Intent) on March 1, 2004.
