BHPB To Notify EC Of Proposed Aquisition Of Rio Tinto

BHP Billiton revealed May 30 that it would file a preliminary notification on the proposed acquisition of Rio Tinto with the Commission of the European Communities (the "Commission"). The Commission has not yet produced any official statement on this matter, but the action of BHP Billiton would understandably trigger a formal deliberation by the Commission concerning BHP Billiton's proposed merger plan. The Japan Iron and Steel Federation ("JISF") that has been consistently opposing to the proposed merger scheme, announced May 2 stressing again that it would hold fast to its protesting actions before antitrust or fair trade related authorities in major countries concerned.
