This is in response to the challenges made by Dr. W. Jochle to our published article (Theriogenology, 2001;55:1127-1141). Our answer is in two parts: the first regarding whaling and the second regarding the procedure, i.e., the length of time after death before blood collection and analysis. Part 1. (S. Ohsumi) Wolfgang JOchle has mixed his science with false statements concerning whaling based on the rhetoric of anti-whaling propaganda. Many of his statements, including those that whale hunting is banned worldwide, that Norway and Japan disregard the agreement known as the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling, and his implication that the taking of whales for research purposes in the Antarctic sanctuary is illegal, are all simply false. Jochle's misrepresentation of the provisions of the Convention and the regulations of the International Whaling Commission (IWC), together with the fact that he has disregarded (or at least not considered) the comments of the IWC's Scientific Committee on the matter of Japan's whale research programs, raises an issue of credibility.
