It has happened not by chance; but rather by an orchestrated effort of many segments of the sug-arbeet industry. It seems it has taken a long time to get to this point of commercialization, but in reality it has been a rather rapid process. U.S. farmers have broadly adopted biotechnology in crops since its introduction in 1996 — notwithstanding uncertainty about consumer acceptance as well as economic and environmental impacts.
