The World Health Organization (WHO) has stepped up the activities of its intergovernmental working group that was established to address the issue of research and development (R&D) into medicines for diseases that disproportionally affect developing countries1'2. In January 2007, the WHO executive board expanded the provisional agenda of the Intergovernmental Working Group on Public Health, Innovation and Intellectual Property (IGWG) to include a number of possible inter-sessional meetings and a public consultation leading up to the group's second and final meeting in October 2007.
