Characterization of Virgibacillus sp BOrMES-11: An Anti-Vibrio harveyi Strain Isolated from Philippine Mangrove

Two hundred mangrove bacteria isolated from soil collected from different mangrove sites in the island of Mindoro were assayed for antimicrobial activity against Vibrio harveyi, the most virulent bacterial pathogen of shrimp in the Philippines. Isolate BOrMES-11 exhibited the highest zone of inhibition (ZOI = 21.0 mm) among four strains that showed antimicrobial activity against the pathogen. This isolate was also found to produce higher extracellular lipase (11.6 U mL(-1)) and protease (15.8 mu g mL(-1)) at 48 h than at 24 h.
