摘要

Streptococci of veterinary importance generally co-exist with their animal hosts without producing clinical disease. The organisms typically colonize the skin, upper respiratory, gastro-intestinal and genital tracts. When infections do occur, the bacteria typically cause inflammation with abscesses and pus formation. In small pets, Streptococcus canis is the most common cause of pneumonia, necrotizing fasciitis and toxic shock syndrome. S. suis occurs primarily in nursing or recently-weaned pigs, with septicemia being the most severe symptom. S. equi is frequently the cause of strangles and pneumonia in horses, while a variety of streptococci are responsible for equine osteomyelitis, arthritis, and common wound infections. In fish, S. iniae has been associated with a variety of skin and internal organ infections.
