Mycoplasma bovis-associated disease: Here, there and everywhere

Associated with a number of bovine diseases, Mycoplasma bovis is most commonly implicated in mastitis and pneumonia, from which bacteraemia and arthritis may result. With increased cattle movement over recent years, M. bovis-associated disease has spread world-wide, so that few countries remain free of the pathogen. In spite of this, there is still relatively poor appreciation of its impact on animal health and welfare, with under-diagnosis in many regions due to a lack of the specialised techniquesrequired to detect the organism and the incomplete understanding of the pathogenesis of infection.
