Management of Post-partum Cervical Uterine or Rectal Prolapses in Ewes Using Caudal Epidural Xylazlne and Lignocaine Injection

Combined caudal epidural injection of xylazine and lignocaine (0.07 mg kg~(-1) and 0.5 mg kg~(-1) respectively) provided effective analgesia permitting replacement and retention of rectal, cervical or uterine prolapses in post-partum ewes. Whereas nine of 16 ewes showed moderate or severe straining before epidural injection and replacement of the prolapse, only two ewes showed slight straining afterwards. Two ewes died 2 days after replacement of a cervical prolapse; post mortem examination of one ewe revealed suppurative peritonitis.
