Subfertility is defined as "the state of being less than normally fertile." This may result from a variety of abnormalities: lack of libido, inability to perform the breeding, and abnormalities of the semen. Subfertility may be suspected if a stud dog fails to produce Litters in over 75% of breedings when bred to normal bitches using adequate breeding management protocols.(8) This situation is frustrating and costly to breeders, who typically have invested a great deal of time and money to produce, campaign, and advertise their stud dog, inability to consistently produce litters can be terminal for a dog's breeding career.
