Ultrasonographic findings in two calves with bone sequestration of an extremity.

This report describes the ultrasonographic features of bone sequestration of the limb in 2 calves from Japan, an 8-month-old Holstein calf (case 1) and a 3-month-old Japanese black calf (case 2) presenting with a localized firm swelling in the limb. Case 1 had a traumatic incident affecting the medial aspect of the mid-metatarsal region 2 months previously, while case 2 was diagnosed with haematogenous osteomyelitis of the medial aspect of the tibial diaphysis one month before admission. The calves were treated by sequestrectomy. The position of the sequestrum was easily identified at the site where ultrasonography had revealed it preoperatively. The animals recovered within one month following surgery.
