Bovine ephemeral fever in beef cattle herds in the Jordan Valley, Israel

Bovine ephemeral fever (BEF) is an arthropod-borne, acute viral disease of cattle and buffaloes. It is caused by an arbovirus of the family Rhabdoviridae, a member of the genus Ephernerovirus. BEF is an inflammatory disease of short duration (Uren and others 1992), and there is some evidence to suggest that it is immunogenic in nature (Burgess and Spradbrow 1977, Uren and Murphy 1985, Uren and others 1989) and that its clinical characteristics are the result of the expression of mediators of inflammation common to a number of acute febrile diseases, with a secondary hypocalcaemia (Uren and others 1992, St George and others 1995). The clinical signs and pathological changes are a reflection of the effects of the replication of the virus and of the host's response to infection (Burgess and Spradbrow 1977).
