Omeprazole is used as a prophylactic against gastric ulceration in horses, and doses of 1 mg/kg of buffered omeprazole orally once a day have been shown to be effective. For enteric coated formulations, doses of omeprazole as low as 0.5 mg/kg are registered in Australia for the prevention of gastric ulceration in the horse. The aim of this study was to determine whether enteric coated omeprazole at a dose of 0.5 mg/kg orally, once a day is as effective as a daily oral dose of 1 mg/kg in preventing the development of squamous gastric ulceration in thoroughbred racehorses.
