INCREASINGLY unpredictable weather patterns are making the planning and management of cattle health more challenging, and government and industry organisations need to collaborate to support farm health plans in reducing the risks to cattle health associated with these changes. This is among the recommendations made by the Great Britain Cattle Health and Welfare Group (CHAWG) in a recently published report. The report, which examines the state of cattle health and welfare in Great Britain, highlights the need to prioritise health and welfare issuesand set defined targets and for the industry and governments in England, Scotland and Wales to collaborate in achieving measurable results. The group, which aims, among other things, to encourage and coordinate a programme of economically focused improvements to cattle health and welfare across Britain, was established in 2009 with funding from the English Beef and Lamb Executive and DairyCo. It published its first overview of the cattle industry in 2012.
