Colgate-Palmolive Co. cannot support the claim "Same Whitening Ingredient As Strips" on packaging for Colgate Optic White Toothpaste and should discontinue use of the claim, the National Advertising Division says in an Aug. 14 report. NAD sides with challenger Procter & Gamble Co. in the oral-care giants' latest advertising-claims skirmish, asserting that Colgate's claim conveys the unsupported message that Colgate Optic White toothpaste provides similar whitening efficacy to P&G's Crest 3D White Whitestrips. In fact, the 1% hydrogen peroxide in Colgate's toothpaste is "a far smaller percentage" than the approximately 6% in P&G's whitestrips, and the products are applied differently, notes the Better Business Bureaus advertising watchdog.
