Estee Lauder: Better-than-expected sales and lower spending levels fueled a strong fiscal first quarter. The firm recorded profit of $140.7 mil., compared with a profit of $51.1 mil. in the same quarter last year. Diluted earnings per share of $0.85 were far higher than analyst expectations. Net sales were $1.93 bil., a 4% drop, but excluding the impact of foreign currency translation, sales only "decreased slightly" from year prior. Lauder's skin-care business, a "strategic priority" for the firm, advanced 1.9% for the quarter - gaining share in U.S. prestige department stores as well. Overall sales were down 5% in the Americas, but up 10.7% in the Asia/Pacific region. "While satisfying, these strong results should not mask the challenges and uncertainties we still see in the global economic environment," President and CEO Fabrizio Freda said in a release.
