China is planning to almost double its ethanol production capacity,in an effort to cut its dependence on imported oil and tackle a looming shortage of automotive fuels.By 2007,the country plans to build ethanol plants with a combined capacity of 1m t/y in the Guangxi region in southern China,according to reports on China's national news agency Xinhua.The plants will produce ethanol from cassava,a root vegetable not dissimilar to the sweet potato that is widely grown in tropical and subtropical regions and known for its high energy content.
