New protease inhibitor

A protease inhibitor licensed to treat multidrug-resistant HIV patients has been launched by Boehringer Ingelheim.The new drug,called tipranavir (Aptivus),is indicated for combination antiretroviral treatment of HIV-1 infection in highly pre-treated adults with virus resistant to multiple protease inhibitors.The company says that its non-peptidic chemical structure may contribute to its favourable resistance profile.
