Can intensive care comply with concordance?

Concordance has enjoyed the backing of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society and others but there has been little critical debate addressing the model's worth. This paper attempts to evaluate concordance theory and discusses to what extent it can be applied to intensive care units, where communication with the patient may not be possible and compliance is not an issue. This setting has been chosen because it stretches the intended principles of concordance and has not yet been addressed in the literature. Despite the obvious problems of communication with an unresponsive patient, concordance was found to be applicable to many varied situations in intensive care.
