Formulary Management - Effective Computer Management Systems

Formulary management is now widely accepted as a method of helping to control drug expenditure. However, with the advent of physician order-entry, on-line, computerised presecribing, traditional methods have had to be revised. There are five main methods that have been shown to aid formulary and risk management strategies facilitating change to new or replacement formulary agents and general compliance with the local formulary. These methods include the addition of warning information on screen, directive or closed pathways, the use of common medicines pathways or protocols and the addition of fixed course duration. This has increased the efficiency and ease of formulary management within the hospital.
