An accurate way to predict crop maturity has been a quest of researchers over decades of peanut production. While these methods have improved, technology has also advanced, and now the two can be combined to make an even more accurate determination of when to harvest. Diane Rowland, University of Florida associate professor and crop physiologist, who formerly worked at the National Peanut Research Lab in Dawson, Ga., says the decision of when to harvest affects not only what amount of peanuts is yielded, but also the economic return for the producer. "It also affects how well the peanut can be processed and the flavor that is developed," Rowland says.
