U.S. mill consumption of recovered paper in 2011 totaled about 30.5 million tons, about 3 percent less than in 2010, based on data published by the American Forest and Paper Association (AF&PA). That total translates to about 2.5 million tons of recovered paper consumed monthly, and about 85,000 tons per day.AF&PA said consumption of old corrugated containers accounted for 63.4 percent of the total, followed by mixed papers (12.9 percent), old newspaper (11.3 percent), high grade deinldng (8.4 percent) and pulp substitutes (3.9 percent.)Based on domestic consumption data from AF&PA and foreign trade data from the U.S. Commerce Department, Bureau of the Census, domestic mills accounted for 57 percent of overall U.S. scrap paper consumption of 53.6 million tons in 2011, with 43 percent going to export destinations. Overall, 24.5 percent -or 15.8 million tons - were shipped to China, with 14 percent, or 7.4 million tons, going to other foreign markets.
