The entertainment industry has created many television genres- dramas, talk shows, situation comedies, game shows-and, more recently, a new category: reality-based programs. Much of their popularity is due to viewers' desire to get away from the artificial tone of other types of television programming. However, they might be popular for another reason.Many reality-based television shows expose human nature-both good and bad. These shows tend to emphasize the bad because bad usually is more interesting. Alliance formation and dissolution, strategies to thwart the progress of others, blatant lying, deceit, and betrayal capture the attention of many viewers.
