Male reproductive cycle of the knob-scaled lizard, Xenosaurus grandis

In many viviparous lizards, mating takes place in the fall (Pinilla, 1991; Guillette and Mendezde la Cruz, 1993; Swain and Jones, 1994; Van Wyk, 1995; Huang, 1997;Jones et al., 1997; Ramirez-Bautista et al., 1998). For most of these species, the male reproductive cycle peaks during the mating season (i.e., testes and epididymides enlarged or full of sperm); however, in several cases, male reproductive cycles peak in the spring (Guillette and Mendez-de la Cruz, 1993).
