NEOCALLICHIRUS KEMPI SAKAI, 1999, A JUNIOR SYNONYM OF CALLIANASSA KARUMBA POORE & GRIFFIN, 1979 (DECAPODA: CALLIANASSIDAE)

Investigation of callianassid material from Thailand, Singapore, Taiwan and Papua New Guinea - together with reexamination of the type material of Callianassa karumba Poore & Griffin, 1979 - revealed that this species is identical to what has been attributed by Kemp (1915) and others to Callianassa maxima A. Milne-Edwards, 1870 which was established upon a subfossil cheliped. Later, Sakai (1999) considered the subfossil C. maxima and Kemp's recent material as separate species and erected the new nameNeocallichirus kempi. As a consequence, the latter has to be considered a junior synonym of Callianassa karumba. This is the first record of this species from Thailand, Singapore, Taiwan and Papua New Guinea.
