CHECKLISTS FOR EVALUATION OF REFRACTORY LINING DAMAGE IN ROTARY CEMENT KILNS

The damage of a refractory lining usually results in a rotary cement kiln stoppage. Even for a small repair job the kiln downtime can reach 3-4 days. The refractory relining of a kiln represents approximately 2 to 4 percent of total cement manufacturing cost. In a healthy cement market, the loss of cement sales constitutes a very high loss should the kiln be shut down for more than 10 to 15 days. It is obvious its strong influence on plant profitability. Therefore it is of the utmost importance that evaluation of refractory lining damage is done in order to identify its main cause(s), allowing for corrective measures to be taken. The checklists are tools which will help the cement engineer to do this, evaluation. They help him to understand the problem and to decide what needs doing and how best to do it.
