Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a common and clinically important problem in North America: each year, more than 1.7 million individuals experience a TBI requiring hospital-based medical evaluation,1 1.6 to 3.8 million sustain injuries for which no immediate medical attention is sought,2 125,000 develop TBI-related disability,3 and 3.2 million people live with chronic TBI-related disability.4 The health and functional consequences of TBI are many and varied,5 among the most challenging of which are neuropsychiatric problems,6"9 including cognitive impairments, disorders of mood and affect, posttraumatic stress disorder, behavioral disturbances, and sleep disorders, among many others.
