'Preparing an Army for War' - Enduring Lessons from the First World War

In 2013, the Chief of the General Staff directed that the British Army should mark "the centenary of the First World War in a dignified, reflective and respectful manner to commemorate the sacrifice of our forebears, learn enduring lessons, and educate ourselves and others". The approach, involving a five year programme of events and activities, was captured in the Operation Order - Operation Reflect. I was fortunate enough to be one of only two Sappers to participate in the main commemorative events of 2014.
