NOT everybody has been lucky enough to work with the Afghan National Army (ANA). For those that have not it is worth describing some of the terminology I will use in this article. The Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) consists of the Afghan National Army (ANA), a volunteer Army, which recruits nationwide, and the Afghan National Police (ANP), which again recruits nationwide. However, divisions of the ANP, such as the Afghan Local Police (ALP), recruit from a local area as the name suggests. An ANA Brigade is around 4,700 soldiers in size, which is sub-divided into Kandaks and Tolays. Each Kandak is equivalent to a Regiment in size, and the Tolays equivalent to Squadrons.
