THE engineer tempo on Operation Telic 12 was high. The operational imperative to rapidly create forward operating bases for UK Military Transition Teams (MiTT), Iraqi Joint Security Stations (JSS) and US MP Police Transition Teams (PTT) was significant. Additionally, the operational environment was maturing rapidly in the Basrah region and this led to an increased range of agencies involved in construction tasks. The Regiment's most complex challenge was the construction of the Basrah Operational Command (BaOC) facility at the Shatt Al-Arab Hotel (SAAH). This task serves as a useful case study to highlight the tempo and complexity of challenges and pressures facing RE troop commanders on current operations, also illustrated in Figure 1.
