The Malvern Crossing; The Longest Single Span Military Bridge Constructed by the Corps of Royal Engineers on Operations since the Burma Campaign

STRONG, honest and transparent working relationships between the MDA and MCF during assessment, preparation and implementation have delivered a difficult and challenging task. Constructed in an austere and, at times, non-permissive environment whilst working against tight timelines, this project has demonstrated the seamless approach required by Sappers to succeed in executing technical military engineering. The following are general observations from the project: (1) Relationships are key and where possible greater interaction should take place during Mission Specific Training between the MDA and MCF. (2) Peer reviews and knowledge and experience of contractors are crucial. Novel and innovative solutions are often a combination of existing and well practised techniques. (3) When designing, it is essential to consider the skill sets, equipment and material available and the environment in which the task will be delivered to generate the minimal risk. (4) The Clegg Hammer proved a more expedient method of obtaining in-situ ground strength, quicker than the Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) which was also available in theatre. Its utility - outside of the ADR community is worth further debate. (5) Use of Inspection and Testing Plans must be incorporated into core publications, including JDP4.05.
