Bridging to Stabilisation: Can the success of the Sobaat Bridge in Afghanistan be repeated to stabilise volatile areas and encourage growth in the local economy?

IN August 2010, 4 Armoured Engineering Squadron, 21 Engineer Regiment, constructed and opened for the Afghan public the Pul Sobaat (Stabilization) Bridge. The construction of the crossing replaced the existing bridge, which was not strong enough for military transport, lay below the flood level and which was rapidly losing its abutments to erosion. This construction provided many advantages, which significantly will bring stabilisation to the immediate area.
