Eulophia andamanensis Rchb.f. - an orchid from the Andaman Islands

The Andaman an Nicobar group of islands are situated off the eastern coast of India between latitudes 6 deg 45 min N and 13 deg 41 min N, and 93 deg 12 min E and 93 deg 57 min E longitude. The tropical warm, humid climate of the Andaman and Nicobar group of islands provides ideal ecological conditions for a diversity of orchids to flourish in almost all the vegetation types represented in the territory Orchids constitute a high proportion of the islands' floristic composition, which comprises 2,200 species of flowering plants belonging to 84 families. Over 115 indigenous orchids have been reported from Andaman and Nicobar and of these, 25 species are reported to be endemic, nine of them rare and threatened.
