Eulopbia flava: PANKAJ Kumar and GOPAL Singh Rawat discuss an orchid with potential for cultivation in a temperate greenhouse or a tropical garden
MOST ORCHIDSIN cultivation are epiphytes, whether growa on trees in tropical and subtropical areas, or in greenhouses in temperate regions, but there are many terrestrial species whose potential is yet to be explored. Eulophia is one such genus, comprising more than 200 species, including 10 varieties, two subspecies and two natural hybrids (World Checklist of Monocotyledons 2008). It was first described by John Lindley in 1821. The name Eulophia is derived from the Greek words eu meaning well and lophos meaning plume, referring to the crested ridges on the lip of most species. Eulophias are tropical and subtropical terrestrial orchids, with, most species occurring in Africa, and others through southeast Asia and south to Australia, and one species occuring in the New World as well as Africa.
