Providing pesticide-free food for bees and insects is one of the pleasing by-products of gardening organically. If you are growing ornamentals, then pick those that you know are attractive to bees, and remember that many vegetables and green manure crops that we use as part of our productive area can also help the bees. For instance, allow green manure to flower - phacelia, buckwheat andmustard can all be used. However, do remember that they must be cut down before they seed. We can also optimise how we use food crops. For instance, if you leave the brassica plants you harvested in autumn/ winter to flower in the early spring, they provide food for bees as well as giving a home to the parasitic wasps that eat cabbage white butterflies.
