The most recent advancement of sonar imaging has been focusing on the capability of high-resolution imaging, especially for multiple-element arrays and synthetic aperture systems. Consequently, modeling and correction of data acquisition error has become an important subject in high-performance imaging. High-accuracy array calibration techniques are crucial to the performance of sonar systems. However, the fundamental analysis and functions of calibration procedures have not been fully studied in a complete and detailed manner. This paper presents a simple and systematic calibration technique for multiple-element array sonar systems. The presentation includes mathematical and physical modeling, theoretical analysis, and full-scale experiment with the Sonatech SLS-10 array system. ?1996 Acoustical Society of America.
