Geoelectric leak detection survey technology has been developed and applied over the past 20 years for geomembrane installations, principally within the waste containment industry. Up to the present, there has been little economic value placed on this technology, principally because they have mainly been driven by environmental regulations. However, when considering applications such as heap and dump leaching the economic benefits can be significant. This paper explores that economic value. Leak location surveys can be performed on exposed or covered geomembranes, provided that the geomembrane used is electrically isolative. The two most common techniques are the water lance method (ASTM D 7002) and the dipole method (ASTM D 7007). Depending on the method used and specifics of that method, electrical surveys can be performed on wet or dry geomembranes, with soil covers of up to about 1.5 meters.
