As soon as the holiday season ends, anticipation begins to build in Tucson for the "Gem & Mineral Showcase," that three-week show-of-shows during which minerals are only one of the things on people's minds. Yes, you can also buy fossils, gems, beads, lapidary objects, mining artifacts, meteorites, "metaphysical" totems, African masks, Persian carpets, Indian shiva lingas and lots-lots more. And it's lucky for me (I have often thought) that my interests and duties commit me to focus only on three major mineral shows, repressing unease that after ten years of living here I have yet to look in on most of the 40+ other idiosyncratic, doubtlessly fun, funky venues.
