A day in the life

lan McEwan is widely touted as one of the UK's most talented living novelists. His latest book, Saturday, focuses on the events of a single day-Saturday Feb 15, 2003-the day that citizens around the world protested against the seemingly inevitable war against Iraq. His description of the minutiae of urban life in London is set against the backdrop of global history in the making. Although superbly written, his inclusion of so many characters affected by neurology makes the story feel more than a little contrived.
