DON'T BACK DOWN FROM BUILDING DIVERSITY

By now many of us have seen the Association of American Medical Colleges report "Altering the Course: Black Males in Medicine," which takes a sobering look at the decline of black men applying to and entering medical schools over the last 35 years. This report acknowledges the multitude of challenges facing us, but also delves into some areas of potential for adaptation and success. This is so much more than a matter of attracting more applicants. This problem has its roots in the institutions and practices that systematically move these men away from higher education, robbing all of us of the things they might have to offer.
