"Looking back, it would have been significantly easier to forge a path in medicine if I had a family member or close mentor to assist me," says Gnesda, a third-year radiology resident at the University of South Florida. "I had no idea what classes, activities and jobs to pursue to help me advance my cause of getting into medicine."The majority of medical students grow up in families whose parents are not doctors, based on medical school data. For instance, 78 percent of students are children of non-doctors at the country's largest medical school, the University of Indiana School of Medicine.
