Painless plasma jets could replace dentist's drill, research shows.

Plasma jets can destroy bacteria that cause caries and could be an effective and less painful alternative to the dentist's drill, according to a study published in the February issue of Journal of Medical Microbiology. Researchers at the Leibniz Institute of Surface Modification, Leipzig, Germany, and Saarland University, Homburg, Germany, conducted an in vitro study to test the effectiveness of a microwave-powered nonther-mal plasma jet for its antimicrobial efficacy against the common oral pathogens Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacillus casei and Candida albicans, with Escherichia coli as the control.
